Driving between Durham, NC and Baltimore for years it’s easy to imagine that Richmond, VA exist only for about a half mile on either side of I-95. Turns out there’s more to it than that. It is really a nice city with great restaurants, historic mansions, interesting neighborhoods and a great museum, the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts. The VMFA has a very broad collection of furniture and decorative arts. Furniture going back to Philadelphia in 1750 to Victorian to Arts & Crafts to Art Nouveau. Some furniture from Thomas Day, Wallace Nutting, Frank Lloyd Wright and the original of the Voysey mantle clock that Bob Lang built for the August, 2013 Popular Woodworking.

There’s not much more I can add. Enough furniture to please almost every taste. If you get a chance, you should visit.

I understand they also have paintings, tapestries and ceramics.
